B3. How successful have your chosen texts been for their industry?

My first chosen text which has been successful in its industry is the grunge band Nirvana. Before the release of their 1991 album 'Nevermind' the mainstream music consisted of radio friendly pop music such as Madonna and Jason Donervan however when Nirvana made the transfer from small time indie record label Sub Pop to industry giants Geffen records their grunge subculture genre was promoted into the mainstream. By changing the ideology that was present within the mainstream music at the time it opened the industry to more alternative music and record labels began to release and distributed more bands from this subculture genre such as Sonic Youth and The Pixies. This meant that Nirvana were success in changing the idea of what was seen as mainstream in the music industry allowing more alternative genres of music to become more popular.
